Abstract

Purpose : The study examined the effects of group horticultural activities on the ego-resilience and sociality improvement of children from the low-income classes.

Methods: The subjects were 37 elementary school students who used a local children¡¯s center in the city of Daegu. The program was implemented in 25 sessions during a three-month period of time from November, 2009, to January, 2010, twice a week. The collected data were analyzed with a SPSS 17.0.

Results: The group horticultural therapy program turned out to have a positive impact on the ego-resilience and sociality improvement of the children from the local children¡¯s center. The scores for ego-resilience and sociality of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group.

Conclusion: The study provide the evidence that to help them to retain their improved ego-resilience and sociality without getting back to their original state, horticultural therapy intervention programs should be provided on a regular basis to keep boosting the ego-resilience and sociality of children in local children¡¯s centers.
